Brick is Red

ARX is an architectural firm based in Lisbon started by Nuno and José Mateus in Berlin in 1991. On May 6th the MUDE Museum (Lisbon) will launch ARX’s second book, ‘Brick is Red’, a publication marking their 20th birthday.

The edition, limited to 1000 prints, is a celebration of the creative architectural process. Filled with images, text and graphics demonstrating the firm’s best work, the book gives an insight into the design process, from first sketches at inception to completion.

While Brick is Red may suggest a clearly systematized method of work, the design process is in fact non-linear, and often hampered by doubt, error, surprise and failure. This release, like architecture itself, represents a collaborative process – between architect, photographer, graphic designer and writer. In line with the work of ARX, the covers of the book are made of the same grey, recycled cardboard most often used in scale model building.  The absence of a book spine and use of this ‘raw’ material suggests something unfinished, a work-in-progress, or a construction site.

We wish we could hop over to Lisbon to snap up a copy!
