KZN to host architecture congress

Right now, representatives of the International Union of Architects Congress are winging their way to Tokyo to bring home the baton that will be passed on to Durban – the next city to host the prestigious Congress.

In 2014, Durban will set the stage for a conference that promises to reinvigorate the local architecture scene and catalyse the regeneration of the KwaZulu-Natal city. This will mark the first time that the event will be held in southern Africa, and only the second time it will take place in Africa.

With an expected 5,000 architects set to make their way to Durban, the International Union of Architects Congress will place the spotlight on the architectural profession in South Africa, and organisers hope it will leave important legacy projects behind.

Durban has a stand at the Tokyo congress this week. The brainchild of local designer Peter Engblom, it’s been carefully designed to meet the strict standards laid down by the Japanese hosts, including the use of only fire-proof materials. As a result, the stand features delicate voile and rich cotton percale panels with printed collages of urban African symbols and designs, as illustrated in our photo gallery.
