More and more creatives are pooling their talents. Now Conrand Botes and Paco Pakdoust have worked together to produce a wool carpet for Source.
In a bid to promote new product development and an inspired exchange between design disciplines, Trevyn and Julian McGowan of Source often pair diverse creatives to produce once-off or limited-edition pieces for their annual Southern Guild collection.
This year carpet-guru Paco Pakdoust teamed with artist Conrad Botes, known for his comic-book style and often disturbing subject matter, to create a carpet featuring one of Conrad’s portraits. Titled “Haunted”, the carpet (pictured above) is made from Tibetan Highland wool and is three metres in diameter.
“I like working with artists as they are not bound by the limitations of rug making and think out of our box,” says Paco. “It’s also an opportunity to show off the amazing skills of our artisan weavers. I think the end result is a success and the collaboration has inspired our latest collection, Rug Revolution.
“Collaborations between designers, artists and big brands have definitely become more prevalent, for example, Issey Miyake designing an Evian bottle. A lot of it is pure marketing but sometimes it leads to something new and original,” he says.
