New slick city boutique

The Edge range of contemporary furniture was launched by Hartmann & Keppler in Johannesburg last week at Grand Designs. The launch included a sneak preview of soft furnishings and decor accessories by 1886 | Boutique Joburg, the new retail concept that centres on the city of gold.

The Edge was inspired by the revival and redevelopment of Joburg’s inner city, as well as the move to loft living, particularly among young professionals and first-time homeowners.

Moving away from modern classics, which are the hallmark of the Hartmann & Keppler brand, the company designed The Edge with a view to providing furniture to a new generation of customers. Emphasis was placed on functionality and proportion, with quality workmanship and materials underpinning the range. A bookcase, benches, desks and a dining table are among the key pieces.

Anne Hartmann of Hartmann & Keppler says that the functionality of The Edge is a significant selling point as young people grow their furniture collections and living spaces.

Affordability was an important factor with The Edge. “As a result of our 76 years of experience, we were able to innovate solutions throughout the design and manufacturing processes. Thanks to the commitment of our factory and business partners, we managed to achieve a starting price of R1 400.00,” explains Anne.

1886 | Boutique Joburg

In addition, 1886 | Boutique Joburg made its first appearance on the South African design scene, with a collection of soft furnishings and decor accessories that complement The Edge story.

1886 is the year Joburg was established, while the boutique positioning reinforces the emphasis on exclusivity, originality and quality.

In keeping with Hartmann & Keppler’s Joburg roots and the modern-day inspiration informing The Edge, 1886 | Boutique Joburg empahsises city living through textiles illustrated with renditions of the skyline and a photo collage of familiar landmarks, such as the Nelson Mandela Bridge, Telkom Tower, Carlton Centre, Innes Chambers, 11 Diagonal Street, the Gauteng High Court and Rand Club. Historic maps of Doornfontein and Newtown enhance the theme.

According to Lauren Winchester of 1886 | Boutique Joburg, this partnership between Hartmann & Keppler and The Edge is just the beginning. “Many more designs are in the pipeline and we’re looking forward to releasing them in due course.”
