We’re walking the walk in this 145th issue of VISI. As our coverlines promise, not only is bold and brave a theme that runs through the pages, but we’re backing it up with a new-look cover that’s going to make your favourite design magazine immediately recognisable on the shelf.
From the Contributors page and Voices essays to embracing pink in interior design, our content celebrates artists, architects and designers who have not chosen the easy path. Instead, they’ve challenged the familiar and pushed the boundaries of their craft, adding a new layer to advance the genres they work in.
Our main features celebrate the work of Johan Wentzel and Grete van As of W Design Architecture Studio, Marielise van der Merwe and Hendre Bloem – interior and exterior specialists who have designed homes that make a strong visual statement, and that are inherently aware of the landscape they occupy. And because we’re unashamed Mid-century fans here at VISI, we also feature a beautiful 1968 house by legendary South African Modernist APS Conradie – an architect who helped pioneer this style of architecture in this country (page 180).
As ever, we profile the incredible new generation of design talent this country is blessed with – from Spectrum’s Caitlin Warther and Wendy Dixon and their beautiful mirrors, to Gabriel Hope’s quirky imaginary world and Joey Khuvutlu’s partnership with Stephen Wilson. And in our art feature, Sean O’Toole highlights the work of five young local artists whose brave choice is not so much about the subject matter as it is about the medium they’ve decided to use.
Speaking of choices: the VISI team and I would like to thank you for yours. It’s been incredibly affirming and inspiring to see how our magazine and digital content have resonated with South Africans interested not only in design, but in carefully thought-out content conceptualised, crafted and presented by humans. The algorithm is not welcome here.
rain | VISI
I’m not usually inclined to include any commercial messaging in my Ed’s Letter, but this deserves a shoutout – it’s about as perfect a fit as I can think of for VISI. When rain approached us to collab on their rain 101 skins campaign, we quickly realised we had the same goal in mind: to showcase and promote the rising stars of South African design and art. The VISI team chose 10 local creatives and, with rain, invited each of them to design a skin for rain’s 5G smart router. Check out the double-page ad on page 14, and the story of the artists and their designs on page 28 – and you could even win connectivity for a year (page 24).
