It is common for people to consider a neutral as a backdrop or primary base when purchasing tiles. We look at a few popular neutrals and offer some tips and guidelines

Colours are divided into warm (red, orange), neutral (yellow, blue) and cool (blue, velvet). Pure neutrals such as white aren’t considered warm or cool. Adding a slightly yellow or grey tint to your room can make it warmer or cooler.

Since South Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, we love warm colours. That could be why beiges, ivory, and even taupe reign over light greys (thanks to the sun and south-facing rooms).

Beige

The second most popular neutral (white being the first) is beige.

Call it what you will. Beige isn’t the ”hip” word, but still, beige is where it all started. Beige is anything from white to greyish yellowish.

It’s available in various light tints that give it a neutral and warm appearance.

Ivory or Sand

It is seen as a deep tone of beige or, as the name describes, adding a dash of reddish yellow to beige, resulting in various tones.

And then there’s the mushroom or Taupe

According to the Dictionary of Color, the first use of “taupe” as a colour name in English was in the early 19th century. Still, the earliest entry by the Oxford English Dictionary was in 1911. In 1846, “All shades of grey are fashionable and negligee, particularly pearl grey, iron grey, and Taupe.

Think brown grey or greyish brown, whichever one resonates. There are different tones of Taupe in all sizes when looking at tiles for your kitchen or bathroom wall or floor.
