Art For Living: Andrea Brand

A lifelong fascination with colour, patterns, texture and ancient cloth traditions created a natural path for Andrea Brand’s art to be transferred onto a variety of lifestyle and interior surfaces.

Being an artist with a background in colour therapy, she knows how much colour affects our living and working environments and her designs aim to create a sense of flow and connection within spaces.

All her work is influenced by her interaction with nature and its cycles, symmetry and mysteries. “Symmetry in nature has a deeper mystery and it is endless,” says Andrea. “It is incredible what detail one finds in the smallest things and how it is echoed in larger bodies.”

The 2018 Andrea Brand Designs collection, entitled Traces, found its form in the lush beauty and layered depth of an island jungle and in the fascinating lifecycle of leaves – with growth leading to decay and decay feeding growth. There are three ranges within the collection: Jungle, Autumn and Leaf Greens. The official launch for the Traces collection will be at 100% Design South Africa 2018.

Andrea is excited by the many ways the world we live in offers to deepen the scope of one’s art and designs through collaboration. She has worked with other creatives on a yoga lifestyle range, as well as a natural body product range where her customised designs were printed on the packaging.

Her collections are all digitally printed on high-quality lifestyle and interior fabrics and upholstery, as well as on wallpaper, wood and cork. She is currently exploring printing on leather. Running a business based on the use of sustainable materials is very important to Andrea and she is constantly searching for recyclable materials that leave a small footprint.
