Born and raised in Zambia, Cape Town-based designer Lucy Mulima is making waves on the local design scene with her inspired fashion label, Aya Goods. We quiz her about her brand, fashion and what lies ahead.
What makes you tick?
I am inspired by tradition and driven by contemporary design. My ready-to-wear apparel and leather accessories speak a language that is rooted in good and accessible design for the culturally-conscious individual.
How did Aya Goods come about?
Founded in 2015, Aya Goods is a clothing and leather accessories label born from a dream to create timeless items from African-inspired and traditional African handwoven materials.
What’s the inspiration behind your brand?
My work with Aya Goods is inspired by a desire for an Africa that is driven by traditional and cultural innovation, as both a celebration and preservation.
Where do you source your fabrics?
Aya predominantly sources fabrics from West Africa and relies on bespoke local tailoring to create eclectic, yet timeless items.
Your favourite summer fashion trend?
I’m a sucker for a luxe slip dress. (See Julia M’Poko and Oroma Elewa).
Your worst fashion faux pas?
Although I think trends can be stylish, I find trendy fashion without the nuance of personality/personal style, uninspiring.
Current colour crush?
It’s a toss between Pantone’s dusty cedar and spicy mustard. In any case, I’m partial to complex earthy tones with a healthy splash of print at the moment.
Your favourite local and international fashion designers?
I’m currently besotted with the works of Julia M’Poko (Mo’ko Elosa) and Bubu Ogisi (IAMISIGO).
What’s in store for Aya Goods/Lucy?
The possibilities are endless, hence the name Aya Goods. I’m a creative at heart and this manifests in many avenues. For now I’m content with presenting an ode to Africa in the form of inspired clothing and accessories. The future remains to be lived.
