The owner, Candice Wyatt-Minter : A stylish space for stylish lady... The neatest salon ever visited!|
Saving space : The double-sided mirrors suspended from the ceiling are a great space saving trick. Note the hooks on the side of the mirrors for client's handbags.|
Everything has a place : The display of Davines hair products used in the salon reminds you of an artist's studio.|
Surprising functionality : The circular backdrop to the interesting reception desk is actually a trellis for climbing plants. Wow!|
For a laugh : The so-called "titty planters" (because of the pink nipples) proudly draw attention to the exposed tin ceiling, and can be hoisted down on watering days and controlled back up.|
Lighting effects : Brass chandeliers with a titanium-effect finish (a green-pink shine, depending from which angle you look) are paired with large glass ball lights. Note the custom-made glass ball floor lamp on concrete base.|
Curate with care : All the basic salon items were selected with great care by Candice.|
Room to breathe : Previously the AA admin offices, the space was simply opened up and adapted to suit the new owner's trade.|
Hare salon : The names of the hares: MyHairs and Graces.|
Spot colour : A yellow outdoor light greets you at the front door - the only bit of colour around (except for the pair of golden hares).|
Entrance feature : Hooks for coats and scarves, a hat stand and a cheval mirror — that is also used in the training areas — with a hook on the side for bags.|
KISS - keep it simple, stupid : Simplicity rules in the men's washroom.|
Ladies first : This elegant console with the bevelled mirror is the entrance to the ladies' powder room.|
Wyatt interior style tips from Annemarie|
WORDS & PRODUCTION Annemarie Meintjes PHOTOS David Ross
The super-trendy Wyatt Hairdressing and Barbering salon, designed by Dokter + Misses with some designs by Joe Paine, is featured in our SPRINGLOADED VISI 68. The exquisite shoot was produced by our inimitable deputy editor Annemarie Meintjes and here she shares some outtakes and details that particularly stood out for her. Annemarie writes:
The Wyatt hair salon is situated on the top floor of a rescued double-storey building at 44 Stanley, just behind the old Metal Box building in Millpark, Johannesburg. I loved the way the designer trio Dokter and Misses and Joe Paine didn’t try to upgrade the space to the nouveau, freshly built type of space usually occupied by hair and beauty specialists, but rather worked with the given – even taking their design cues from it.
