What To Expect: The Cape Town Flower Show

The Cape Town Flower Show runs from 27 to 30 October 2016 at the Castle of Good Hope, coinciding with the iconic building’s 350th anniversary.

This event is an annual celebration of gardening, planting trends and floristry, and this year’s show focuses on water-wise gardening.

SOME OF THE MAIN FEATURES

  • Show gardens: There will be more than 20 gardens designed by some of South Africa’s top landscape architects and designers, including award-winning landscaper Megan Mackenzie.
  • Water-wise gardening: This section will showcase water-saving techniques.
  • Floristry: Workshops and demonstrations will take place in the Floral Theatre, coupled with a MasterFlorist competition where the contestants will create daily themed arrangements. Eliminations will take place, culminating in the announcement of the overall MasterFlorist winner on the last day of the show.
  • Flowers in Art An exhibition of paintings, ceramics, etchings and other artworks depicting flowers.
  • Workshops and demos: The topics include vertical vegetable gardening, floral arrangements, biomimicry and orchid care.
  • Horticultural exhibits, nurseries and seeds: Various retailers will sell garden-related products, plants and seeds, and will be on hand to answer questions and offer gardening advice.
  • The Food and Drink Garden: All this show-going is a hungry and thirsty business, which is why this area is bound to be popular with visitors. Besides artisinal eats there will also be craft beer, gin, bubbly, soft drinks, tea and coffee.
