Local furniture stalwart Weylandts collaborated with three talented South African designers as part of its Theatre of Sleep installation at 100% Design South Africa.
The industrial designers included Mpho Vackier of TheUrbanative, Thabisa Mjo of Mash. T Design Studio and Monique Vee. The brief investigated the four stages of sleep and dreaming, each conveyed through the means of a whimsical pod created by each of the designers. The idea behind the brief was to push the boundaries and notions around bedroom furniture.
Mash. T’s designs included the Zig Zag Wall Light, crafted with a steel frame and wool fibres; the Zig Zag Pendant Light, a miniature version of Thabisa’s signature Tutu 2.0 Pendant Light; the Half Moon Shelf, made from rolled steel; the Leap Clothing rail, hand-cast in terrazzo in a pink, orange and grey aggregate; and the Hourglass Stool – a wire stool hand woven with different fibres.
Monique Vee’s creations include the Nostalgia Swing, with a solid oak seat, steel handles and a natural fibre rope; The L Shelf Bent Birch Ply, adaptable as floating shelves and available in various sizes; the Dawn Mirror, available in 600 mm and 900 mm, which is chemically treated to give off a bronze hue; and the Midnight Mirror, chemically treated to give off its distinctive blue tone.
TheUrbanative contributed with the XXX Headboard, made from solid oak with an oak veneer and TheUrbanative print; the Capsule Wardrobe, with pill-shaped solid oak shelves and handwoven rope detail; and the Capsule Bench, with a steel frame, rope detail and bold geometric patterns.
