Simon Beck describes himself as a snow artist. He slips on his snow shoes and creates intricate patterns while he walks. This particular creation was made while on location in Stryn in Norway.

How does he do it? On his Facebook page, Simon explains how his work is broken down into stages, the first stage being measuring. “Usually I work outwards from the centre. Straight lines are made by using the compass and walking in a straight line towards a point in the distance, curves are made by judgement. Both require a lot of practice. When the primary straight lines and curves have been made, points are measured along them using pace counting for distance measurement. Next the secondary lines are added by joining the points determined by the above process. Usually I walk the lines three times to get them really good, if there is enough time. Lastly the shaded areas are filled in.”

It may sound complicated, but the end result of this process is breathtaking… and certainly worth it. “There’s always a sense of anticipation because you never really know what it’s going to look like until you see it,” says Simon.
