Haldane Martin’s brand-new modular planter system enables city dwellers to grow vegetables and other plants on vertical walls.
Award-winning South African designer Haldane Martin is known for creating high-end furniture that’s not only beautiful, but also sustainable.
His latest design project, the Wallflower Urban Garden system, was launched at the 2011 Design Indaba Expo last week and allows for a healthier, more sustainable future.
“The seed for Wallflower was planted four years ago when I came across the Seoul Commune 2026 project. I was inspired by this architectural vision for high-density, sustainable living where we bring nature and farming back into the urban environment,” says Haldane.
His revolutionary planter is made up of three wall-mounted containers that integrate metal trellising and a branching, water-efficient drip irrigation system. Made from recycled roto-moulded polyethylene plastic and recycled stainless steel, the planters are also UV stable.
As Haldane would love to see his Wallflowers climbing up buildings all over the world, the next step is to gear up for large-scale production. This entails making three rotational moulds for the planters. As this is an expensive process, Haldane is hoping to get help in the form of financial contributions via Kickstarter.com.
