Vorster & Braye Ceramics

WORDS Michaela Stehr

Local design studio Vorster & Braye is focused on creating stylish, bespoke hand-made tableware and decorative objects.

Based in Cape Town on the bustling Long Street, Martin Vorster and Colin Braye use a multitude of techniques to create individual pieces.

Each item is designed and made in-house with intense attention placed on the final finishes. “Our focus is on form, shape and colour, rather than surface decoration,” explains Martin. “We employ various manufacturing techniques, including throwing, slipcasting and jiggering.”

With a varied tonal range extending from earthy shades and subtle metallics to accent and brighter statement pieces, each handcrafted creation exudes an understated elegance, designed to outlast fleeting trends.

“Textures can be anything from rough, unglazed clay to textured matt and high-gloss glazes,” continues Martin. “We particularly enjoy the contrast created by using different textures on the same piece.”

Head to 96 Long Street, Cape Town to view or purchase Vorster & Braye ceramics. The studio is open weekdays from 9am until 6pm and on Saturdays by appointment.
