VISI 120 is HERE!

There are three things I love about winter.

ONE: my beard. I should clarify that I’m the only one who loves my beard… My family roll their eyes when the annual turn of season signals my razor’s hibernation. Granted, it’s not the most luxuriant of beards, and it’s beginning to fleck with grey, but I like the way it marks the passage of time and affirms my growing silverback status.

TWO: I get to wear my vintage black leather jacket. Mid-length and double-breasted, with big wooden buttons, it was already second-hand when I bought it at London’s Camden Market in 1994. The ensuing decades have added scuffs and wear lines, giving the stiff leather a degree of comfortable softness
and patina of gravitas that its owner likes to think is entirely appropriate. Cue more eye-rolling from the fam.

AND THREE – and this one does get actual nods of approval – it signals the prospect of a winter-weekend getaway. There’s something special about escaping to the countryside or to a wild winter seascape, cocooning with roaring fires, delicious food and great company. In this issue of VISI, we focus on some innovative design approaches to mountain cabins, luxury tents and desert lodges. And if you’re really not a winter person, you can jet off to warmer climes and a spectacular neo-Mayan face-brick masterpiece on the Mexican coast (page 120). Plus, we bring you your usual fix of international trends – see our report back on Maison&Objet (page 38) – and a celebration of local art and design talent (our focus on South African textile art on page 186 is a must-read).
