Ultraframe: Futuristic Furniture by UM Project

WORDS Cheri Morris

Showcased at NYCxDesign last month, UM Project‘s fantastical furniture collection Ultraframe is a unique blend of traditional furniture making techniques and futuristic design.

The Brooklyn-based design brand UM Project, which stands for User and Maker Project, showcased their surrealist storage units in collaboration with Dutch brand Febrik that created the knitted textiles seen on some of the six alphabetically named pieces.

The storage units include an armoire, chest of drawers, clothing cupboard and shelving. While some of the uses are more apparent than others, each design enables its use to be open to interpretation. The out-of-this-world looks are inspired by architecture and high-end transportation design, seen in the aerospace, shipbuilding and automotive industries, with construction making use of hard shells or flexible skins that cover mechanically engineered substructures.

The geometrically-inspired interiors coupled with the contrasting soft or smooth exteriors makes for a simultaneously familiar yet foreign aesthetic. Materials include laminated phenolic plastic tubes, hinged flat panels, knitted materials, thick fabrics, aluminium, concrete, Corian fins and various types of wood.
