Thingking’s Meta Furniture Range

WORDS Aaqeelah Floris

The two creatives behind Thingking have taken their business to a new level with a range of welded steel furniture pieces under the label Meta.

Lyall Sprong and Marc Nicolson have been making waves in the design industry since they launched their studio Thingking, “a collaboration between designers and makers”, in 2010. Over time, they have fallen in love with the simplicity of steel and the processes it undergoes while being transformed into something functional, which ignited the idea for Meta, a range of stools and tables as well as signature pieces such as pot plant stands. The range is constantly evolving, and the most recent addition is a platform bench sofa inspired by Eastern seating.

One of the stand-out pieces is the Standard Desk, a flat-pack table that is sophisticated in its simplicity. It consists of three pine planks and a powder-coated mild steel base that joins at the legs. “It’s an approach to flat-pack furniture that we have not seen before,” says Marc. Meta pieces can be ordered online, and they’re busy setting up a showroom in Paardeneiland.

“Steel is incredibly strong, easy to recycle and quite cost-effective,” says Marc. “Despite all the technological advances in materials, we still see steel everywhere, which suggests that it might be here to stay.”

Pot plant stands are priced at R850 to R1 800, and a Standard Desk costs R4 500.
