The next generation M

WORDS: Remy Raitt

It’s no surprise that the 71 units of the new BMW 1 Series M Coupé made available locally are already sold out. A few minutes behind the wheel convinced VISI’s Remy Raitt that it’s one hell of a ride.

I’m renowned for my granny-driving skills, but it was easy to put pedal to the metal in this modern interpretation of the hallmark M car. Since this first taste of athletic speed around a Top Gear-style racetrack, I’m now yearning for life in the fast lane. The jelly-legs I experienced after flying from 0 to 100km in 4,9 seconds weren’t due to nerves, but pure exhilaration.

The new 1 Series M offering is as efficient as it is good-looking, which is why it gets the VISI thumbs up. Impressive features include a six-cylinder engine and direct injection, but the sleek lines and high-end designer interior, which exude an attitude of well-deserved arrogance, is what clinched the deal for me.

Plush yet functional, the interior reflects the same feeling that the car sparks when you get behind the wheel. You can choose from three paint finishes – non-metallic Alpine White, metallic Sapphire Black and metallic Valencia Orange – colours that are superbly suited to the suave Boston leather sports seats.

Members of the M Coupé’s cult following will be glad to hear that the sports car ambience doesn’t stop at the aesthetics. For the first time in a serial-production vehicle, air curtains were used upfront to optimise the aerodynamic qualities of the car while a powerful shoulder line and sculpted surface create a striking side perspective.

Of course, this kind of car envy comes at a price. I’m pretty sure, however, that the 71 lucky local owners who forked out the R541,000 to buy it, have no regrets. If you’re turning a shade of green, hold tight: there just might be a few more available later this year.
