The New Italian Design Exhibition

WORDS Lindi Brownell Meiring

An exciting travelling exhibition is on until 25 October 2014 at The Lookout at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

Arturo Dell’Acqua Bellavitis, president of Fondazione Museo del Design-Triennale Design Museum in Italy (the country’s first museum dedicated to Italian design), explains that the idea behind the exhibition is to bring design to the public, to show the public that not all Italian design pieces are expensive and unattainable.

The exhibition showcases 288 works from 133 designers, some well established, others up-and-coming. The works stem from fields including graphics, jewellery, accessories, interiors, food design and product design, as well as seven research projects.

Many of the smaller items are displayed on conveyor belts spread out across the venue (which we think is a pretty cool way to show off over 200 hugely diverse pieces).

There will also be a series of talks and Q&A sessions in conjuction with World Design Capital 2014, Triennale di Milano and Italian Trade Agency (ICE) during the course of the event. Italian architects Maurizio Molini, Giovanni Giacobone and Chiara Tonelli will be speaking on 9 October, 16 October and 22 and 23 October respectively. The talks start at 6pm and end at 8pm. Prosecco and canapés will be served. Click on the relevant dates to RSVP directly.

The New Italian Design exhibition is definitely worth a visit. Entry is free.
