The Mood Collectives: The Winelands-based Interior Showroom

WORDS Cheri Morris

The Mood Collectives by design duo Kim de Villiers and Cynthia Chasteau de Balyon is an interior showroom-cum-living mood board of expertly crafted, beautifully designed and locally manufactured furniture based in the Cape Winelands.

We caught up with them to find out what sparked their maiden furniture collection and what you can expect to find on their showroom floor.

You’ve worked together on a number of projects under your own brands, but what inspired the collaboration for The Mood Collectives?

Four years ago, we saw a gap in the market and decided to join forces. We both realised that sourcing furniture for our clients had become rather challenging, especially if we just stuck to accessing the Winelands area. The choices were limited and quality of imported items was letting us down. Driving through to Cape Town also proved to be very time consuming. This lead to our concept: a large, permanent space offering a good variety of superior quality interior and furniture items.

Give us the 411 on your interior showroom and what it offers.

Our showroom is located in an industrial node between the Strand and Somerset West, which is fast becoming an exciting décor and design focused hub. Our goal is to provide an inspiring space that houses local, expertly crafted furniture and accessories; allowing clients to not only choose their ideal pieces, but also experience the textures and colours in a tangible way.

Tell us about your recently launched Mood Collection.

It’s a furniture collection born out of necessity: a curation of locally manufactured furniture items that we couldn’t seem to source elsewhere. This range fuses high-end craftsmanship with low-key sophistication. Think sensuous upholstery pieces for inside and out, the latest performance fabrics, clean-lined coffee tables combining the likes of oak and sintered stone and seating that balances comfort and contemporary elegance.

How would you describe your signature style?

We base our colour palette on the ideals of minimalism. Neutral and muted tones offer a more natural and back-to-basic influence on a space, inviting a calm, peaceful and relaxed lifestyle. As an extra
benefit, reduced form furniture and limited palettes eliminate waste and allow for open and airy spaces. We aim for elegance, quality and simplicity in our spaces.

What’s next for The Mood Collectives?

Our business ethos is based on three key values: quality, service and uniqueness. By trying not to
drop the ball on these values we believe we will grow from strength to strength. It’s the small things that make a difference these days. People are looking for more personalised service and we like our
clients to feel appreciated, something that is missing in so many industries. We hope to create even more inspiring interior spaces and continue to add exciting pieces to our furniture collections.
