Architecture and design firm Oiio Studio has released a proposal to create a monumental U-shaped skyscraper called The Big Bend that they hope will take the title of “longest building in the world.”
Due to the ever-increasing demand for high-rise luxury residential towers in New York and the ever-decreasing amount of space that’s available, the New York- and Athens-based studio came up with the idea that sees a skyscraper bend completely over itself. The Big Bend would be created from a thin structure that curves at its peak and continues all the way back to the ground, measuring a total distance of 1.22 kilometres.
The Big Bend, which some believe will ruin the New York City skyline, would be located near New York City’s so-called Billionaire’s Row in midtown Manhattan. The building is essentially two buildings adjacent to one another, but formed into one via the connection of the large bend at the top. The design focuses on the substitution of height with length and to creatively solve challenges that builders are faced with due to rigorous zoning laws.
