After undergoing a refurbishment last year the Bascule Bar, tucked away in the basement of the Cape Grace Hotel at V&A Waterfront, was transformed into an intimate space that honours African narratives and culture through the artwork adorning its walls. The hotel and bar’s exclusive art collection is now expanding through a new collaboration with the acclaimed Norval Foundation. This partnership represents a significant advancement in the Cape Grace’s dedication to developing an innovative and inclusive collection that showcases the richness of contemporary South African artistry.
Newly added to the collection are remarkable works from esteemed artists Nicholas Hlobo, Dada Khanyisa, and Zanele Muholi. These artworks, which are on extended loan, enhance the already comprehensive permanent collection that includes works by Maja Marx, Lulama Wolf, Galia Gluckman, Tafadzwa Tega, Nabeeha Mohamed, and Teresa Kutala Firmino, to name a few.
“It was important to me to show the diversity of art forms from the continent and to introduce truly unique works in a multitude of materials. I wanted to create a visual layering that invites guests to look closer and to feel the work,” says Cape Grace collection curator Lezanne van Heerden.
“I believe that artworks carry a vibration that comes from the intention and honesty of creation, and I want guests to experience the love and care with which these pieces were made. I also wished to create a gentle ambience and sense of home; that the artworks are visually inviting but also accessible and comfortable to ‘live with’,” she adds. | capegrace.com
