Tucked away between olive groves and vineyards on a working boutique wine farm in the Franschhoek Valley, Terre Paisible Medical Rejuvenation & Spa offers a serene escape for those seeking a sensory reset away from the frenetic pace of city life. Designed by the award-winning Tristan du Plessis Studio, the space combines natural materials, soft curves and layered textures to evoke a sense of calm, perfectly in tune with its surroundings.
“Our client’s vision was a serene, contemporary space that balances warmth with a clean aesthetic,” says interior architect Tristan du Plessis of Tristan du Plessis Studio. “We selected a neutral palette, complemented by mirrored surfaces and stone, to evoke a sense of ethereal lightness while remaining firmly grounded in the environment.”
To fully integrate the philosophy of “natural wellness” into the spa’s design, Tristan and his team used natural materials and textures, such as handcrafted stone and hand-rendered plaster, throughout the interiors. “We chose these on the merit of how they would make the guests feel in different spaces – more impactful in moments of walking through the spa and more pared-back, neutral, natural finishes in the treatment rooms – providing a sense of excitement and wonder as well as a centred calmness when we want time to slow down for our guests,” he says. “Marrying warmth with clinical cleanliness was definitely a challenge, as we had to follow the function of the spaces first and foremost, and choose where to create more organic moments.”
Light and shadow also played a role in shaping the interiors. “The balance between natural and ambient light, reflection and shadow helped us to create an ethereal atmosphere – from the screens that cast patterned shadows at the entrance, designed by Boogertman + Partners, to the moulded-steel reflective ceiling panels that ripple like water, mimicking the light reflection from the pool, which adds a secondary layer to the overall design,” explains Tristan.
The resulting space embraces the views of the vineyards, citrus groves and mountains beyond, acting as a platform to engage with the landscape. “Our intent was not to compete with the scenic wine farm, but rather to design a space that fosters calmness and relaxation – and to prioritise the atmosphere and the experience over just aesthetics.” tristanduplessis.com | terrepaisiblemedicalspa.com
