Concrete Studio & Skinny laMinx Coasters

Playing and having fun creating patterns has always been at the heart of Heather Moore’s Skinny laMinx brand. “After spotting the patterns I generated during my #100daysofpattern challenge last year, Charmaine Nolte of Concrete Studio approached me about producing a range of concrete tile designs,” says Heather. And so a collaboration between the two brands formed and a range of fun tiles was launched.

Fast forward a few months and the idea behind the tile range was transferred to coasters. Our limited edition concrete coasters come in four different patterns and add a pop of colour to any table.

3. Freyá Hats ‘Avery Bucket Hat’

Inspired by the original bucket hat, the limited edition Avery Bucket Hat in “Sicilian Summer” from Freyá Hats is a timeless unisex sun hat. These special VISI hats are made from 100% cotton and the fabric is scientifically tested in South Africa to ensure UPF 50+ protection (essential for those lazy days on the beach).

4. Rekindle Co. Scented Candles

We do LOVE at scented candle! They make ideal gifts and elevate any space. We recently teamed up with the Rekindle Co. to create a limited edition VISI Rekindle Co. Candle inspired by the Tsitsikamma (available in two sizes).

Sumien Brink, the former editor of VISI, has teamed up with local photographer Paris Brummer to create a limited edition range of tea towels, exclusively for VISI.

Sumien Brink, the former editor of VISI, has always loved print and cooking, and now has had the chance to combine the two. Sumien’s range of printed vintage tea towels celebrates historical illustrations of plants and animals done in the style of bygone times.

For this limited edition VISI collab she has teamed up with photographer Paris Brummer (a regular contributor to the pages of VISI). These tea towels are made from 100% linen and come in a range of four bespoke designs, featuring Paris Brummer’s snaps. These tea towels are 65X65cm and can also be used as napkins.

Using the traditional French Jacquard technique, and natural fibres such as French Linen and African Cotton, African Jacquard combines a variety of weaving styles, such as their signature waffle weave, together with traditional African geometric designs to develop unique and extraordinary textiles.

Local ethical jewellery atelier, PICHULIK, has created two limited edition earrings exclusively for the VISI Shop in celebration of Women’s Month.

Founded by Katherine-Mary Pichulik, this local ethical jewellery and accessories atelier is inspired by ancient traditions and cultures from around the globe, while celebrating femininity and wisdom through considered design. These camel and aqua earrings have been inspired by architect and designer Michele De Lucchi. He was a prominent figure in design movements such as Cavart, Studio Alchimia and Memphis, and has designed numerous lamps and furniture pieces for brands like Artemide, Olivetti, Alias, Unifor, Hermès and Alessi.

These orange and blue earrings have been inspired by architect and designer Alessandro Mendini. He played an important part in the development of Italian, Postmodern, and Radical design. In 1978 he joined the Studio Alchimia as a partner and worked closely with Michele De Lucchi.

Local home decor brand Concrete Studio together with Skinny laMinx have created a fun limited edition range of concrete coasters, exclusively for VISI.

Playing and having fun creating patterns has always been at the heart of Heather Moore’s Skinny laMinx brand. “After spotting the patterns I generated during my #100daysofpattern challenge last year, Charmaine Nolte of Concrete Studio approached me about producing a range of concrete tile designs,” says Heather. The result? A collection of concrete wall and floor tiles inspired by the shapes and colours she sees in her everyday life in Cape Town and on her travels.

Fast forward a few months and this collection has now expanded to include an exciting limited edition concrete coaster collab with VISI.

The coasters are made from concrete with a cork base underneath. The collection is sold in sets of four and is available in four fun designs which means you can mix and match to create patterns:

Inspired by the promise of Summertime! The days are longer, the mountain is full of flowers, and there’s sunshine to warm our bones.

Plant The Belly Band

The belly band wrapped around each coaster set is made from Growing Paper.  Growing Paper is a handmade paper skilfully crafted from waste paper collected from schools and businesses. The product not only keeps waste paper from our landfills, but helps create jobs for people in the Malmesbury community. By planting this belly band you’re not only supporting and empowering a local community project, but are making the earth a prettier and greener place, too.

Local conscious furniture and design brand deft. studios – founded by design duo Martin Tallie and Zani Alberts, blossomed as a response to living curiously and creatively. We chat to the dream team about their work and their collaboration with us, available through the VISI shop.

How did deft. materialise?

Deft emerged in the midst of Covid as a creative outlet & means of design exploration. We both have a  background in architecture and found the extension of design into furniture making to happen naturally. Our mutual passion for all things design & the hands-on craft of making paved the way for deft. 

What is your design aesthetic?

We’re constantly exploring new avenues of design & remain open to new concepts. We don’t tie ourselves down to a singular aesthetic, but rather a set of values & principles which we embrace throughout the processes of our work. These include simplicity, purity, longevity and a meticulous craftsmanship. If our work can spark joy in people’s everyday surroundings and not harm the environment in the process, we’re happy.

What was your process for collaborating with us?

We’ve always been avid admirers of VISI and the work they promote in their publications. The VISI collabs is an exciting platform to advocate the designs of new local designers. Our inclusion in Design Indaba’s Emerging Creatives 2021 program gave us the boost we needed to reach out to the team and propose an exclusive range of products.

When you created the hooks, what was your intention for the pieces?

To create an alternative to the ‘typical’ wall hook, leaving room to see how people would utilize it in interesting ways. It’s a simple, practical and fun addition.

Is everything manufactured locally?

Yes. Everything is designed & crafted locally. We only work with local suppliers in our area which we’ve built strong relationships with. If we expect people to support our local business, our business must also support local.

Where do you see deft. going in the future?

Deft Studios was always imagined as a multidisciplinary design studio. We aim to extend our design services into the field of architecture, focusing on residential dwellings. We are constantly learning & evolving as we go. Currently, we hope to grow our team to a humble size and to remain personally engaged with customers. We will always be rooted in the slow craftsmanship of making quality, bespoke furniture pieces. 

Tell us about why South African design is so important?

Only South Africans can capture our diverse culture-led perspectives & storytelling through design – it’s unique. SA Design has gained recognition on a global landscape which proves the potential that we have as creators. Not only are we investing in our local communities but design has the potential to fuel economic growth in SA. I think we can all agree that local is honestly much more lekker.

Local sustainable candle brand Rekindle has created limited edition scented candles in smooth white and brushed black ceramics, exclusively for VISI.

This limited edition scent is inspired by the Tsitsikamma – where sunlight and the mist are trapped between the earth and the ancient green canopies that shade the forest floor in dappled light.

The candles are hand-poured with mineral wax from Durban, a bi-product that would otherwise become waste, now becomes candles. The ceramic vessels are handmade in the Cape, using locally sourced clay. Rekindle uses cotton wicks and natural essential oils for fragrance to lower carbon emissions. The brand’s suppliers are mainly comprise of local female owned small businesses.

The collab is available in two sizes – medium (single wick) and large (three wick). Each candle is delicately scented with notes of Rosewood, Eucalyptus and Patchouli.

Martin and Zani, the design duo behind Deft Studios, draw inspiration from principles obtained through their architectural studies and apply them to their line of furniture and product designs. Their new limited edition collab with VISI on their Key Holders and Organic Pebble Hooks embrace simple geometries and clutter-free design.

The Key Holders are neat and functional wood and powder coated steel small ‘shelves’ which have been designed to help you find your keys and store away items lying around the house.

Local outdoor design studio SPRUNG has designed two new colourways of the Deck Mate table, exclusively for VISI.

The Deck Mate side tables have been designed to sit alongside your lounger to provide the perfect platform for your drink, snack and book. You can also position two back-to-back to make a fun low side table for both indoor and outdoor spaces. The Deck Mat can also be mounted on a wall and turned into a shelf.

These low tables are made from 2mm galvanised steel, measures at 350mm wide X 200mm deep, and have been powder coated.

Local home decor and design brand Mo’s Crib, headed up by Morongwe ‘Mo’ and Michelle Mokone, is behind the creation of these hand-made swan sculptures, a range of which the duo has made exclusively for VISI.

Last year we launched these origami-inspired swan sculptures in four different colourways, and they sold out in a flash! We’ve got good news for all of those who never managed to get their hands on these creations in 2020. We’ve launched a new limited collection of Mo’s Crib Paper Swan Sculptures just in time for the gifting season.

The paper sculptures measure at 135mm (B) x 110mm (W) x 190mm (H) and are made from upcycled paper.

It takes about six hours to make one sculpture by hand: cutting and folding paper before putting the swan together and sealing it with glue for shine and strength. The glazed finished product, which is both durable and multifunctional, is an ideal and creative storage solution.

Currently available via the VISI Shop in four colourways – Grey & Cream, Grey & Yellow, Orange & Pink and Pink & Orange – with more colourways coming soon.
