Now in its 36th year, the Standard Bank Young Artist (SBYA) Awards rewards the brightest young creative talents working and living in South Africa today.
The Visual Art prize for 2018 has been awarded to Igshaan Adams, an exciting Cape Town-based visual artist who combines aspects of performance, weaving, sculpture and installation to create a refreshing language to discuss faith, gender and identity. Drawing upon his upbringing, his cross-disciplinary practice is an ongoing investigation into hybrid identity, particularly in relation to race and sexuality.

This year, in addition to Igshaan, honours went to Chuma Sopotela (Performance Art), Guy Buttery (Music), Jemma Kahn (Theatre), Musa Hlatshwayo (Dance) and Thandi Ntuli (Jazz).
Igshaan Adams’ next solo exhibition will be held in January 2018 at blank projects.
