Smart Idea: Light duty

Deputy editor Annemarie Meintjes shares a resourceful way to make nifty garden candleholders yourself – without even breaking a sweat or chipping a nail. Simply put the white candles in PVC tubes salvaged from the trash and poke the tubes into the ground!

All you need

  • Thin PVC tubes. Fabrics imported from the East come wrapped around these tubes. They are discarded by fabric shops, so ask them if you can raid their trash.
  • Standard white candles – we used Price’s Classic long-burning candles, available at supermarkets in a pack of eight.

All you do

The Price’s candles fit perfectly into these PVC rolls. Stick the other end into the ground. And there you have elegant, designer-looking candles for outside! Now for a romantic summer evening in the garden…
