Smart Idea: Life after potholes

Do not despair when you have to replace a tyre (or two) due to the state of our urban roads. Rather, why not reclaim your damaged goods and transform them into seats?

What you’ll need

  • old tyre, painted with Plascon Wall ’n All White
  • 1 sheet (1 200 x 800mm) of polypropylene (available from Papersmith and Son)
  • pile of old newspapers
  • fabric (for the cushions) – we used patent PVC in Citron from Tessa Sonik’s Contacts range

How to

Cut the polypropylene sheet into two squares the size of your tyre. Slide one square inside the tyre so that it covers the bottom hole. Then fill the tyre to the top with folded newspapers. Close the hole at the top by sliding in the second polypropylene square. Place the upholstered cushion on top of the tyre, and there you have it: a quick and easy seating solution. The cushions pictured here were made by De La Ray Upholsterers.
