VISI loves that everyone is getting out of air-conditioned retail centres and into the fresh summer air to do their shopping – not to mention what social affairs markets have become. Wherever you’re holidaying this year, we’ve put together a guide of our favourite design markets.
The Lock Stock, thelockstock.co.za
Cape Town has no shortage of cool and worthwhile markets, but for homegrown designer wares – from clothing to furniture – the relaunched Lock Stock market at the Woodstock Exchange every Saturday is ticking our boxes. Shoppers are always guaranteed fresh design, as vendors are rotated from week to week.
I Heart Market, iheartmarket.blogspot.com
One of Durban’s most notable artisanal hubs, I Heart Market takes place in the People’s Park under the enveloping angles of Moses Mabhida Stadium on the first Saturday of every month. Immerse yourself in interesting edibles, wearables and share-ables. Its patrons are pretty cool, too – it’s the meeting place for Durban’s crafting community.
Collective, collective-jhb.com
Joburg’s Collective is a vibrant showcase of good-quality design and decor, as well as jewellery, accessories and vintage clothing. It takes place on the first Sunday of every month on the rooftop of 3 Desmond Street, Kramerville, with some wonderful views over Sandton offering the perfect excuse to sip champers.
Capital Urban Market, marketcapital.co.za
Barely a few months old, the Capital Urban Market in Pretoria brings together over 40 food and design artisans, filling the lawns at the Moyo Fountains Valley Nature Reserve. Forming part of the Cool Capital 2014 initiative, this monthly event also has plans to pop up in more unlikely urban spaces, so keep an eye on its website.
Keep abreast of all the markets, pop-ups and sales this season through VISI’s social diary.
