SA’s First Instagram Auction House: Apollo Auctions

Started in November 2015 by Cape Town’s Joe de Wet, Johann Schwella and Blaise Janichon, Apollo Auctions is South Africa’s first Instagram auction house.

The idea behind Apollo was to provide a platform for young artists to sell their work. To ensure international bidding is encouraged, the team chose to accept bids only in US$. The first auction, which features the piece To Hold To Love by local artist Danielle Clough, is currently sitting on a bid of $120.

There are still two more Instagram auctions being held this year, featuring origami artist Ross Symons and graphic designer Jaco Haasbroek, on 10 December and 17 December respectively.
