Private Tanera Mòr Island

WORDS Vanessa McCulloch

Ever dreamed of owning your own little island in Tanera Mòr? There is one currently on the market.

Think ‘private island’ and your mind is bound to travel to the tropics. The usual suspects come with golden beaches and swaying palm trees. Not so with Tanera Mòr, the largest of the Summer Isles, 2.4km off the North West Highlands of Scotland. You’ll find spectacular scenery of a different sort here, a rugged raw beauty on this island that is 2.5km long and 2km across. There are no proper roads or shops, but you will find otters, Highland cows and passing porpoises, plus fishing aplenty in this wild escape.

The property comes with nine houses, some hugging the sea shore, others perched up on the cliffs. In the early 1900s, 120 people called the island their home. These days, a family of three are the only full-time tenants, but the island has year-round visitors, and six of the houses are rented out as holiday cottages. There’s a cafe and a tiny post office.

In midsummer, enjoy 18 hours of daylight with the sun finally dipping into the horizon at 11pm. You might not need your bikini, though: the average summer temperature is around 16ºC.

Suggestions for potential investors include nature conservation projects, setting up a wellness centre and outward-bound projects. Or, simply revel in the tranquillity of this remote northern setting. Size is 323ha (around 3.23km2).
