WORDS Tracy Greenwood
With the constant threat of load shedding, alternative power sources are de rigueur. The Power Plant has to be one of the most appealing options on the market.
We may have grudgingly learnt to live with load shedding, but nobody wants their TV fried by a power surge when the lights come back on. What you need is a UPS, or uninterruptible power supply, to protect your computer, sound system and other electronic equipment.
The Power Plant by Obbligato and My IT Works is a UPS unit with backup batteries that provides continuous electrical supply in the form of pure sine wave energy.
All you have to do is plug it into a wall socket – or have it wired into the mains by an electrician – and your sensitive electronic devices will be protected against electricity spikes and surges.
There are three power options (from 1 000 to 10 000 volt-ampere) and various casings to choose from, including basic one-on castors and the decorative model pictured left that looks like an Obbligato planter.
The Power Plant ticks another couple of boxes with its silent operation (no generator-style buzzing) and no emissions to tweak your carbon-footprint guilt.
Prices for Power Plants start at R18 700 and Power Pod 1 from R7 500.
