WORDS Mary Garner IMAGES Julia Karl on Behance
Julia Karl, a German-Russian illustrator and graphic designer based in London, has created a series of illustrations called Plant Opulence.
The works, which explore the rising trend of having plants in the home, are created using black and gold ink and feature sketches of potted plants and bonsai on paper.
The project came about after she noticed a surge in images of Scandi-inspired rooms, cosily decorated and filled with pot plants of all shapes and sizes, on Instagram and Pinterest. “But what is it about?” she asks on her Behance page. “Alternative lifestyles? Nature-friendly life choices? Looking at them I wonder since when did nature become such an object of aspiration and fulfillment? A boastful display of achievement, a new kind of luxury. Plant Opulence is an ongoing series of illustrations exploring this phenomenon.”
