Picks of the Week: Indaba, Art Fair & Guild edition
1. Nostalgia bag from Vernac Bags by Dennis Chuene at Design Indaba : "We've seen hundreds of upcycled bags before, but in my opinion, this one is the coolest and pretty much has it 'in the bag'," art director Anton Pietersen keeps his puns low-flying. "Go African design!"|
2. Death Range by Mingo Lamberti at Design Indaba : Features writer Debbie Loots swooned over Mingo Lamberti's surreal-themed T-shirts. Her favourite being the pretty floral-made coffin tee from their Death Range. "Check it out!" she exclaims.|
3. Zoo Biscuit Cushions by World of Wonder at Design Indaba : "I love all things bright, happy and colourful, and these quirky little iced Zoo cushions just brought back the carefree childhood memories that make me smile," editorial and online assistant Chantel Hans beams.|
6. Fallen Birds Nest lounge chair by Porky Hefer at Guild : Despite all the fancy global stars at Guild, features ed and online editor Nadine Botha lost her heart to Porky Hefer's latest work. "After last week's jam-packed design and creative over-stimulation, I could just curl up in a ball and smile," she admits.|
7. Jacques LaGrange Couture fashion show at Design Indaba : "I loved the mix of traditional African and European prints and fabrics, as well as the sparkly detailing. The traditional beaded necklaces and head wraps finished the modern African looks beautifully," brand manager Cecilia du Plessis drools.|
4. Artwork by Esther Mahlangu at the Cape Town Art Fair : "This glorious Ndebele-print mannequin, painted by the great Esther Mahlangu, is everything," ed-at-large Malibongwe Tyilo states simply. "I want to take it home and stare at it all day."|
5. Venetian glass chandeliers by Jacopo Foggini at Guild : Deputy editor Annemarie Meintjes couldn't get enough of Guild and, in particular, Rossana Orlandi's stand with these Venetian glass chandeliers in vibrant yellow and red. Oh, but wait, no, her showstopper was: "The War Horse!!!!!!"|
8. City-in-a-Box pop-up card from Wit op Wit : "My pick from all the stuff at Design Indaba is the Cape Town pop-up card version because I live here, but there are also versions of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and even Bloemfontein," editor-in-chief Sumien Brink placates.|
