Earlier in June this year, jewellery designer Katherine-Mary Pichulik went on an artist residency for two months, to Villa Lena on the Tuscan countryside, a trip for which she blogged exclusively for VISI. At the end of November, she launched Lena, her Spring/Summer 2016 range, inspired by colours and culture she experience during her trip.
“The pieces are a personal memento of Tuscany’s languid noon heat, a cool breeze blowing through an olive grove ahead of a welcome summer shower and night-time swimming in a luminescent blue pool,” she tells us. The launch was held at The Ring Boxing Club in Cape Town. Along with the jewellery, PICHULIK also launched a fashion apparel collection, which is a brand new offering for the label.
The range, which is called Nolita was designed by Nadya von Stein, along with co-designer Megan Taljaard. Says Katherine about the collection: “I wanted to show the more gritty, blue collar side of Italian culture and focus on the immigrant neighbourhood of Nolita in Manhattan, NYC. So now you know why we chose the name Nolita for the collection and why we celebrated in the ring!”
The easy-wearing utilitarian threads feature high-waisted tailored trousers, palazzo pants with sheer detailing, a rope halterneck dress, shift dresses and high-waisted full-circle pants, all made of navy hand-dyed hemp fabric. In addition, PICHULIK also launched a range of espadrilles in collaboration with Espadril, a shoe brand founded by South African Rizqah Isaacs and Spanish Patricia Terre just under a year ago.
