Situated in the prestigious V&A Waterfront Marina, the Pembroke Apartment – designed by Phillip Nel and Heinrich van Zyl of Ohkre Collective – exemplifies a seamless fusion of urban sophistication and coastal tranquillity.
“The design brief called for a space that balances refined luxury with the relaxed sensibility of coastal living,” says Phillip. The team wanted the interiors to feel harmonious with the seascape beyond and achieved this by embracing the natural light. “We worked with diffused window treatments and a muted, matte interior palette to gently temper the light. The spatial layout also required careful calibration to balance openness with intimacy,” he explains.
The muted palette and layered textures are central to Pembroke’s aesthetic. “The aim was to allow the natural materials – timber, stone, woven fabrics – to take the lead. This subdued colour story enhances the connection to the marina and creates visual consistency across the space, making the interiors feel calm, layered, and enduring,” says Phillip.
Among the standout features is the fluted stone kitchen island, custom-made by Assirelli. “It brings a sculptural presence to the open-plan layout, while its soft curvature and natural texture help ground the overall palette,” says Phillip. “Wardrobe cabinetry was also executed by Assirelli for a cohesive finish,” he adds. Bespoke joinery throughout – from wall panelling and media units to the study desk and headboards – crafted by Randall Smith, adds a layer of detailing that elevates the space. Lighting from Modular Belgium and a feature pendant by Greg Marshal introduce rhythm and sculptural interest.
The curated furnishings help create a sense of sophistication and comfort. “Pieces from South African makers such as Wunders, Petersen’s, Mezzanine, and Fine Furniture provide a rich sense of materiality and tactility. Fabrics from Home Fabrics and African Jacquard add softness and texture, while also anchoring the space in a local design narrative. Every item was chosen to feel harmonious and human – contemporary, but never clinical,” explains Phillip. | ohkre.com
