Cool Spaces: Orchard Cottage

If you’re looking for a quaint, small-town getaway, Orchard Cottage offers a calm self-catering retreat in the heart of Riebeek Kasteel.

With ancestry in the Swartland, the owner always dreamed of owning property in the area. When an idyllic plot of land in Riebeek Kasteel covered in olive and fruit trees came on the market, she immediately knew this was the perfect spot to build her cottage. Wanting to remain in keeping with the original style of the area, Joubert Malherbe Architects was appointed to design a classic Cape-Karoo style cottage with a long veranda and large windows.

Orchard Cottage in Riebeek Kasteel

This comfy cottage exudes old-world charm, tucked behind a small olive grove of 16 trees. The space can comfortably house up to 6 guests in 3 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms. The owner wanted to combine a feeling of laid-back, country-style living with elements of luxury. The gorgeous Oregon pine harvest-spread style table, restored sash windows from an old Cape farmhouse and veggie garden growing seasonal produce create a farm-style feel while high-quality linen, locally sourced designer ceramics and upholstery and Smeg appliances add an essence of luxuriousness, which complements the classic country-style space.

Some stand-out features include the bespoke headboards upholstered in Whiteman & Mellor fabrics, the gorgeous farm-style plunge pool, the mini olive tree orchard, hot high-pressure showers, the long veranda, David Schlapobersky and Mervyn Gers crockery, exquisite indoor fireplace and outdoor braai-area as well as a solar system.

Immersed in nature and situated in a walkable neighbourhood filled with quaint shops and restaurants, Orchard Cottage is a perfect tranquil getaway for friends, family or even just a solo trip.
