NEW-V-OU opens in Greenside

Drawing on four generations of knowledge and expertise in the buying and selling of army surplus and antiques, a unique new decor store has opened in the heart of Greenside, Johannesburg.

NEW-V-OU, the latest reincarnation of Pretoria business H. Falkson, is refreshingly different and welcoming. However, it also has a long, fruitful history.

Almost 100 years ago, Harry Falkson established his demolition and construction business, H. Falkson, on Church Street in the heart of historic Pretoria. His son Leon took over the reins and started attending government and military-surplus auctions, starting a multi-generation love affair with auctions and collecting odds and ends.

Falkson’s great-granddaughter Tamar Falkson has now added her personal touch to the family business, moving the store to the popular, leafy suburb of Greenside in Johannesburg. “I’m trying to take the family business into a new space, not only geographically but also in terms of design, and to create something more edgy and ‘out there’,” Tamar says.

NEW-V-OU (pronounced “nouveau”) isn’t a traditional antique or second-hand store, but rather a store that seeks to showcase and give new meaning to old things, ranging from furniture to odd industrial tools.

Each item gets a new lease on life through creatively repurposing it, thus old ceramic inhalers become teapots or jugs, culture jars become vases and old “vark panne” become TV-dinner trays.
