New Spot: The Shortmarket Club

In partnership with his wife, Sandalene Dale-Roberts, superstar chef Luke Dale-Roberts of The Test Kitchen fame will open The Shortmarket Club, a new restaurant in the heart of Cape Town’s CBD on Shortmarket street, just off Bree Street on 27 June.

Wesley Randles, who has worked closely with Roberts since the opening of The Test Kitchen, will head up the new venue, while Luke will take on a supportive role.

The menu will focus on modern interpretations of classic dishes and, in keeping with that, the space’s décor scheme, which was conceptualised and designed by Sandalene, is a modern take on old world opulence.  Vast banquettes form the centrepiece of the dining area, while striking blacks and deep aubergines form the backdrop, creating a moody space with two skylights that allows light to pour in. Sliding doors that separate the bar and dining area are accented with stained glass made by Anika van der Merwe, a local artist and owner of Silverstain Glass Studio.

Sandalene has infused a potent vintage touch with the addition of copper lamps in the dining area. “The space has the feeling of a club, and we’ve used leather and wood extensively,” she explains.

The Shortmarket Club is located at 88 Shortmarket street and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily (closed Sundays). To book your table, email info@theshortmarketclub.co.za or book online via theshortmarketclub.co.za.
