Kitchens are all about the details: there’s a myriad of choices when it comes to countertops, shelving and finishes. For Meyer von Weilligh, the integrity of materials and quality of design is the most critical part when it comes to designing a dream kitchen space.
Organic lines and natural textures are the main source of inspiration for Abrie von Weilligh and Norman Meyer, the designer due behind Meyer von Weilligh. Finding the inspiration in their surroundings – the lush Garden Route – has informed every aspect of Abrie and Norman’s designs and made them synonymous with the use of wood, organic lines and intricate textures. “We believe that each tree has a story to tell and so we respect the beauty inherent in every piece of wood that we use,” says Abrie.
They use only registered wood and select every piece of raw timber themselves. The starting point for each piece of furniture they create is always centred around the unique qualities of a particular piece of wood.
“We enjoy the design challenge that comes with working with wood, especially when we start playing with interesting detailing and finishing. We want to add character to our kitchens so that they don’t become cold and sterile spaces… and wood allows us to do that”.
Meyer von Weilligh’s handcrafted kitchen designs, fitted cabinetry and floating shelf systems are more like bespoke furniture pieces than your run-of-the-mill kitchen fittings. “Nature provides us with an incredible array of colours, textures, and materials that enhance our creative design process,” says Norman. “Functionality is also very important to us – we add value to the kitchens we craft by combining thoughtful design and cabinetmaking skills. We like to make use of tried and tested joints in our designs but interpret them in a contemporary way so that they fit in with our client’s modern lifestyles”.
The designer duo’s are working on a new product – the Outeniqua Kitchen Island – a celebration of the Southern Cape’s rich tradition in cabinetmaking, which dates back hundreds of years.
“With this range we look at the kitchen and especially the kitchen island as a furniture piece that draws inspiration from a tradition of quality, that can outlast a trend but still fit in with our modern lifestyle. We pay homage to this cabinetmaking tradition by making use of tried and tested joints that are made to last. We’ve stripped back unnecessary elements – which showcases the beauty of the wood and highlights the joints we use,” explains Norman.
The kitchen island will be made to measure, can be shipped nationally and will be available in oak, ash and iroko solid wood.
