Mandela Day 2018: Get Involved


Looking for a way to give back to your local community this Mandela Day? Here’s a list of fun and creative projects to get involved in across the country.

Make Toys at Cotlands

Visit a playgroup on Mandela Day to help a child make a toy from recyclable materials. You can also collect second-hand toys the children can use as part of their early learning theme kits – these will be used in the Cotlands toy libraries. You’ll be provided with templates and a list of recycled goods needed to produce the toys.

67 Blankets

This year 67 Blankets aims to win the Guinness World Record for the “Longest Crochet Scarf in the World” by collecting scarves that together measure 27 km, a kilometre for each year that Mandela was in prison.

FoodForward SA in-store Food Drive

Volunteer your time during 13 – 15 July 2018 at any Pick n Pay store in the below cities. Hand out branded shopping bags and encourage shoppers to buy selected non-perishable food items and donate them to FoodForward SA.

You can also spend 67 minutes at various packing events in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Rustenberg or Bloemfontein to sort and pack the donated groceries for distribution to beneficiary organisations.

When: 13 – 15 July 2018 (volunteer) and 18 July (corporate packing event)

Habitat For Humanity

Help build 100 homes for 100 families in honour of Mandela’s 100 years.

The Viva Foundation of South Africa

Focusing on poverty alleviation, Viva Kids, Viva Village Independent School and volunteers will be painting, gardening, cleaning, cooking, as well as feeding and entertaining children on 18 July 2018 in Mamelodi.

On 19 July 2018 at the Alaska Informal Settlement in Mamelodi East, there will be a focus on SAPRI Sexual Violence Prevention, house visits, training, putting up posters and awareness material.

Revamp Rooms at Uitkoms Home For Girls

Uitkoms Home For Girls is looking for 20 volunteers to spend four to eight hours revamping the bedrooms at Uitkoms Home For Girls. The idea is to get the rooms ready and revamped before the school holidays end.

Get involved in the cyclathon at R500 per team of two in Bryanston from 5 am on 18 July 2018. Book a Wattbike and ride as far as you can in 67 minutes.

The Red Cross Children’s Hospital

Donate to The Red Cross Children’s Hospital by dropping off any of the below:

  • New fluffy toys
  • Colouring books with crayons

Contribute your 67 minutes by helping to build a Rainbow Tower at the KZN Children’s Hospital. Buy a brick for R100 on the day, or purchase online. You can also participate in the list of various activities they have planned for the day.
