Maldives travel tips

VISI online editor Carine Visagie spent a few blissful days on an island in the Maldives to experience the newly renovated Constance Moofushi Resort – the focus of our wood-inspired travel story in VISI 55.

This family-oriented resort is synonymous with barefoot luxury – a concept that’s been successfully achieved with stylish references to the sea and the generous use of wood.

Keen to go? Make the most of this unforgettable island-holiday experience with these travel tips by Carine:

– Go on a scuba-diving course before you leave. This will mean you can make the most of the underwater world once you’ve touched down on the island. The Maldives is widely regarded as the best diving territory in the world, and the reef on which Moofushi is located offers spectacular marine life.

– Pack an underwater camera, an extra bottle (or two) of sun cream and an additional bathing costume or bikini – you’ll spend most of your time on the beach or in the sea. The humid weather conditions means that you have to re-apply sun cream every hour or so, and an extra swimsuit is useful when your other pair is left outside to dry.

– Ask your pharmacist for motion-sick tablets. A seaplane, or air taxi, will jet you off to the island from Male airport. The ride is bumpy and the plane is stuffy. Not a good combination if you’re prone to motion sickness… (Drink the tablets at least an hour before lift-off.)

– Pack lightly. You really don’t need much as you’ll be idling your time away, sipping cocktails on the beach. Leave your heels and pack only one coat – the weather is balmy all year round.

– Fly with Emirates and do your duty-free shopping in Dubai. Don’t count on a solid retail-therapy session in Male, which only offers a small selection of outlets.
