VISI sends out a huge congratulation to Greenside Design School student, Karyn Schott, who came third at the prestigious LG 2011 Conceptualife competition in Dubai.
The regional finals of the competition saw an exciting finish as 12 aspiring designers from South Africa, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt and Iran presented their vision for the future of eco-friendly kitchens and appliances to an expert panel of judges.
Under the theme “Green and Futuristic”, the young designers produced an array of innovative design ideas. The winner, Tolga Tekin from Turkey’s Marmara University in Istanbul, was awarded for his design which expertly amalgamates basic interpretations of sand and water with innovative energy solutions. In addition to winning a fully paid one-month internship at Dubai-based design firm X-Architects, Tekin also received $5,000 (R35,000) in cash and an LG Optimus smart phone.
The first runner up was Serder Soyal, also from Turkey, while Karyn took the third spot with her innovative “Cooking Pod” design. In addition to an LG Optimus smart phone, Serder and Karyn were awarded with $3,000 (R21,000) and $2,000 (R14,000) in cash respectively from LG.
“It was a great experience to meet contestants from different parts of the region and I thank LG for this opportunity,” said the excited 20-year-old Karyn. “I have never participated in an event of this scale and I am confident that it will add tremendous value to my future career. To be shortlisted in the top two from South Africa and the top 3 from among several hundreds of participants is a huge achievement and I am extremely happy to have been a winner!”
Each of the 12 finalists were invited to present and explain their kitchen design concepts to an expert panel who evaluated their work based on uniqueness of design, integration of innovative green features, optimum utilisation of kitchen space and environmental friendliness in terms of its materials and functionality.
The panel of judges consisted of K.W. Kim, the President of LG Electronics for the MEA Region; Ahmed Al Ali, the Founder and Executive Chairman of X-Architects and Annie Cudmore, the Editor of InsideOut magazine.
“Even though the contestants were from six different countries, it was very interesting to see similar themes running through all the designs, such as indoor gardens and integrated appliances with functionality being key,” said panelist, Annie Cudmore.
This is the second year in which the LG Conceptualife competition has been held and LG South Africa says that judging by Karyn’s success they are confident that the level of interest in the competition from local design students will only strengthen.
