Life’s a bubble — and you can win it!

All of life’s a bubble, but not all bubbles are created equal. Most worthy locally is the Boschendal Grande Cuvée Brut 2009, which has won the Amorim Tsogo Sun Cap Classique Challenge 2013. And, to top it off, we’ve got a case of six up for grabs!

Besides overall winner, it also took first place in the Best Vintage Brut category. With more than 102 entries (the most received to date) competition was tough, however Boschendal winemaker Lizelle Gerber says that the success did not come as a surprise as 2009 is known to be one of South Africa’s best vintages.

“Grapes for good Method Cap Classique wines need to ripen as slowly as possible and must be harvested at the optimum time,” according to Cape wine master Allan Mullins, chairman of the judging panel. “Method Cap Classique made from grapes that are harvested too early will be lean and acidic and harvesting too late will result in dull and flabby wines.”

The Boschendal was made in the Method of Champagne at the historic Franschhoek winery, where all vineyards are well over 15 years old. Meticulous attention was given to selecting the blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit for the Grande Cuvée Brut 2009. Expect to savour some tantalising fresh green apple, hints of citrus and subtle influences of almond biscotti. With a 36 months aging on the lees, expect to experience a complex and creamy sparkling wine with superb balance and an elegant seamless finish.

And, as Lizelle says: “We normally say that one does not need to wait for the right moment to open a bottle of bubbly, opening the bottle creates the moment!”
