WORDS Malibongwe Tyilo
Six fabric collections from UK-based Kirkby Design have us celebrating spring.
Its six collections for 2015 are spread across a range of influences. There’s Arcade, which takes its name from the retro graphics of the coin-operated arcade game machines that were popular in the ’80s and ’90s. Here, the retro visuals take on a geometric look.
Then there’s the eco-friendly Leaf collection, which tickles our enthusiasm for living green in uncompromising style. It is made from wool yarn salvaged from the Italian fashion industry. The collection is a combination of neutral semi-plains and pastels.
The Astro and Sahara II ranges are characterised by subtle metallic textured weaves and soft brushed cottons in minty hues, respectively.
We are people of the South, however, and nothing grabs our attention quite like bold colour. Cue the Terrazzo Prints and Terrazzo Plains collections. They are high-performance fabrics, making them optimal for use outdoors. They may have been designed in the UK and have an Italian name, but we think you’ll agree they would look terrific under the African sun.
