WORDS Michaela Stehr
Self-taught Los Angeles-based artist Joseph Lee creates anonymous portraits using thick brushstrokes in bold colours.
His abstract pieces are placed against a solid matte background, making the colours and textures used even more prominent. This impasto style gives the impression of wet paint, that the viewer is able to scrape it straight off the artwork.
Despite each portrait not having a full face – some reveal just an eye or a nose – Joseph aims to convey a sense of emotion through each face that he paints.
