South African designer Inga Gubeka has launched Inga Atelier, a new brand specialising in contemporary luxury leather accessories.
Launched at this year’s Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair, the start-up brand is run by a team of six, headed up by Inga as the Creative Director.
Originally from the Eastern Cape, Inga studied design at the then Durban University of Technology (DUT). He was awarded the “Glenfiddich Maverick” title in 2015, before leaving his role as Creative Director of Indalo Décor, a business he co-founded in 2013, which produced wooden backpacks, clutches and totes.
“Back in 2013, starting out in my studio I never imagined how popular the wooden bags would be, regardless that as their designer I was excited about their novelty,” says Inga. “Starting over this time around means that I’m more efficient in resolving known challenges while exercising greater flexibility in resolving new ones. Re-entering the same market with a new brand has meant showcasing the progression and difference in the product offering from what they’ve experienced before.”
