Houtlander’s Rattan and Milk Stool Ranges

WORDS Michaela Stehr

South African furniture design brand Houtlander has added two new ranges to its popular collection.

The new Rattan and Milk Stool ranges, which launched at 2018’s 100% Design South Africa, focus on Houtlander’s ethos of giving contemporary twists to classically designed pieces.

The Rattan range draws inspiration from Cape Dutch furniture, while the Milk Stool range sees Houtlander’s Phillip Hollander and Stephen Wilson reimagine the traditional design. “The milk stool is one of the most basic furniture pieces, first made by carpenters who would turn a piece of wood with a lathe and attach three legs,” explains Phillip. The design has evolved to include both tall and short stools, as well as a bench. “It’s all about taking an uncomplicated product and adding a new dimension through great design,” he adds.
