Since Cape Town was shortlisted as one of the three nominees for the 2014 World Design Capital, the Mother City has been abuzz with design talk.
Locals are singing the praises of their favourite design elements in the city, discussing areas that desperately need some design magic and generally reveling in the power of creativity. The campaign’s bright yellow “I support Cape Town 2014” stickers have quickly become a hit in the design fraternity and beyond.
As the first African city to be nominated, this is big news. The title is awarded biennially by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) to cities that are dedicated to using design for social, cultural and economic development. Not only is the council looking for hot design, but design that makes a difference.
Cape Town, along with the other two nominees – Dublin and Bilbao – have been recognised as design locations that do just that.
In order to try and get ahead of the competition, Cape Town’s been taking notes from the 2012 Design Capital, Helsinki in Finland. When the delegation of World Design Capital 2014 judges comes to Cape Town towards the end of July 2011, we’re determined to knock their socks off.
The official announcement of the World Design Capital 2014 winner will take place on 26 October 2011. How are you helping to ensure that Cape Town is recognised as the obvious choice?
