Ian Perry, founder and managing director of solid-wood indoor and outdoor furniture makers, Homewood talks favourite materials, recent projects and design gurus.
What are your favourite colours and materials to work with?
All shades of natural wood, of course, and neutrals to accentuate the wood. Hardwoods are what we specialise in and are truly passionate about.
Are there any design gurus whose work you admire?
We have admiration for so many, but there are three that stand out: Arne Jacobsen, one of the forefathers of minimalist modern Danish furniture; John Makepeace, the British furniture designer and maker who is a true adventurer in wood; and Gerrit Rietveld, one of the most important designers and architects of the 20th century.
What’s your advice for young designers?
Dream. Conceptualise. Create. It’s as simple and detailed as that.
Tell us about some of your recent projects.
We’ve crafted many pieces for Nando’s restaurants, which are always eclectic, imaginative and vibrant. Working on the RCL Foods head office in Westville was an incredibly creative and colourful experience. We’re currently working on projects for Mowana Lodge in Botswana and The Desert Grace in Namibia, among others.
What currently inspires your work?
We’re inspired by all things African and the Scandi concepts of lagom (a Swedish word meaning “just the right amount”) and hygge (a Norwegian and Danish word for a mood of cosiness). This combination is influencing our current Afro-Scandi designs and creativity.
