Kenyan artist and designer Cyrus Kabiru refashions electronic trash into strikingly flamboyant, playful eyewear that has been turning heads the world over.
Since Cyrus was a child, he has had a fascination with eyewear, but was denied the luxury of them by his father. This is how he began his artistic journey: converting motherboards, speakers, discarded metal and anything else he can get his creative hands on, into arresting pieces of eyewear that often mask one’s whole face.
Cyrus’s work, a combination of art mixed with sculpture, performance and fashion, represents the playfulness oozed by the millennials living in Nairobi.
Cyrus openly expresses his love for trash and sees his art as an effort that offers something with no further use a chance at being appreciated once more. When he isn’t making his quirky creations, he spends his time practicing his self-taught painting techniques. The subject matter of his work features modern Kenyan life tinged with a sense of humour.
